| Watching Arsenal play... |
The next few days are turning out to be
the most decisive of the season for Arsenal Football Club.
First the Gunners continue their
defense of the FA Cup when they host high-flying Hull City at the Emirates on
Saturday, in a game many expect them to win easily. A mere three days later,
the small matter of hosting Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League will arise.
Followed closely by an important away league game at Old Trafford against the Red
Devils.
Ordinarily, I would be pleased with a
win over Hull City. I would take a goalless draw against Barca and a score draw
at Manchester United would not be considered a disaster at all.
But Arsene Wenger would want more. The
Frenchman is not greedy, it’s just unbelievable to work every day with the
talents at his disposal and desire anything less. Not for a long time as Arsenal
been so blessed with several options in all areas of the field that it’s almost inconceivable to not aim for atleast 2 wins out of the next three games.
I’m not one to ignore the threat Barca
poses with the likes of Messi, Neymar and Suarez in their ranks coupled with
going several games unbeaten. But on Arsenal’s day, the Gunners can beat
anyone, and that includes Barcelona.
Welbeck is back to push Giroud even
harder for that striker spot. Walcott is a threat from the bench. Ozil’s
partnership with Sanchez is beginning to look smoother and dangerous while
Ramsey has a cooler head on his neck.
I’ve watched the Invincibles played.
I’ve even read about their unbeaten 2003/2014 campaign. (You can take a look here > Invincible: Inside Arsenal's Unbeaten 2003-2004 Season
)
They tick all the right
boxes. They remain Arsene Wenger’s greatest creation.
But finally, Wenger has a team that can stand shoulder to shoulder with that team. Cech can stand in for Lehmann; Koscielny is almost as good as Campbell; Robert Pires would be proud of Alexis Sanchez; Mesut Ozil may not be as physical as Dennis Bergkamp but he’s every bit as classy; while Cazorla is every inch as thoughtful as Gilberto.

Of course, no one in the current team
can give to it what Vieira and Henry gave to that unbeaten side but the
cumulative work of Wilshere-Coquelin and Welbeck-Walcott should suffice.
Arsenal are still in the hunt for three
trophies but by the end of next week they might all be gone. Hull City are
flying high in the Championship, Man United are in transition and are still
blowing hot and cold while Barcelona are world champions. Should the Gunners
emerge out of the other side with atleast two trophies still in sight, then Wenger's team might just be ready to achieve greatness together.
