Nigerian players were involved on Thursday as Europa League games were played across Europe in the continent’s second-rated competition.
Kehinde Fatai, Schalke 04 2-2
Sparta Prague
Nigerian striker Kehinde
Fatai got a goal in Sparta’s impressive away draw in Germany. The forward who
is yet to be capped by the Super Eagles scored the equalizer in the 50th minute
to cancel out a Franco Di Santo strike in the sixth minute.
The visitors then edged ahead
with a David Lafata strike only for Sane to grab a dramatic late equalizer to
earn Schalke a share of the points.
Paul Onuachu, FC Midtjylland
1-4 Napoli
Goals from Callejon, Higuain
and a Gabbiadini brace helped FC Napoli fly past the Danish champions at the MCH
Arena in Denmark.
Paul Onuachu was a 62nd
minute substitute by which time FC Midtjylland were trailing by three goals. He
couldn’t prevent the Denmark side’s further collapse on a night when the
Italian team was simply unstoppable.
Efe Ambrose, Molde 3-1 Celtic
The Nigerian defender played
the entire duration of the encounter but was helpless as the hosts ran out
comprehensive winners.
Goals from Ola Kamara,
Vegard Forren and Mohamed Elyounoussi were
all the Sweden champions needed to outclass the visitors. Kris Commons scored
Celtic’s consolation goal.
Imoh Ezekiel, Anderlecht 2-1
Tottenham
Nigerian striker Imoh Ezekiel
started for Anderlecht as the Belgian side came from behind to snatch a hard
fought 2-1 win over Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.
Anderlecht also paraded
another player of Nigerian descent, Stephano Okaka whose goal won the game for
the Belgians.
Tottenham took the lead
through Christian Eriksen in the fourth minute but Gillet got the hosts back on
level terms before Okaka snatched all three points in the 75th minute.
