Will Arsenal Be Great Again, Ever?

Several features have become common sight when watching matches involving Arsenal these days. Costly errors from defenders and goaltenders, inability to hold on to leads - slender or not, loss of creativity whenever Fabregas and Van Persie are not available, among others.

No doubt, the team has got tremendous potentials in all departments of the game. Wenger can't stop boasting of his team's fine togetherness. And there are some incredible young talents coming through the ranks with the likes of Ramsey, Wilshere, Nasri, and Sczesczny seen has future greats of the game.

But by the end of this season it would have been six seasons that the Gunners last lifted a trophy. It must be said, though that this current squad looks nowhere near ending that drought. What they have in team spirit and talents is constantly being drained out by unresolved goalkeeping problems, defensive blunders, injuries to key players and certain youngsters who once showed tremendous promises but who has suddenly stunted in their footballing growth.

Wenger has not helped matters a lot, either. Probably mindful of the huge cost of moving to the new Emirates Stadium and the aim to keep the club financially stable, the Frenchman has gradually shifted his side from a trophy winning one to a youth grooming one.

Arsenal have remained financially afloat but such cash book success has come at a high price. And the fans evidently long for the return of the days when world stars like Kanu, Bergkamp, Viera, Ljunberg, Campbell and Henry graced the home turfs of the Gunners' faithfuls. What needs to be done must be done. Ineffective players like Denilson, Bendtner, Almunia, Squillaci, Clichy, Rosicky need to be shown the exit door while proven and established players should be considered to take their place.

More steel and grit need to be added to the midfield, while signing a consistent goalscorer will take much of the pressure off the Flying Dutchman. Polish Sczeczny can learn a lot from one like Buffon, for he's one for the future after showing a lot of innate confidence and promise at such a young age.

Maybe, just maybe, then the great old days may return to the Emirates.
